Avoiding the bruises.

Maybe life isn’t about avoiding the bruises. Maybe it’s about collecting the scars to prove we showed up for it. – Hannah Brencher

Here’s the thing about training for a longer distance event. It gives you time to think, and think, and think. To think about the goal that lies ahead of you and the distance that you have traveled and the distance left to travel to reach that goal.

Typically, my stream of thoughts while training flows all over the place. Half the time, when I reach the end of my workout session, I can’t even tell you what I’ve been thinking about. But I know I had a stroke of genius somewhere mid-workout.

Once in a while, I’ll punch in notes to my phone and then look at my notes later. Thinking that I’ve discovered or come up with some great idea but sadly when I look at said notes, I wonder what I was thinking…

But anyway, training gives you time to think. To think about swimming, to think about biking, to think about running. To think of technique, and distances, and nutrition. To think about family, friends, relationships that are strong, and those that have broken. To life changes, to embracing current moment, to reminiscing of the past and most importantly looking to the future and all the mystery that it holds.

Which brings me back to the bruises. And the scars. Everyone has them. Literal and figurative. The scars and bruises create a map of the places you have been, the people you have loved and lost, the friends that have come and gone, the little moments, the big fat notable occasions, and the events that shaped you without you even realizing it.

This year, I know there are going to be a number of events and occasions that are going to shape my life in notable ways. But more importantly, I know there will be little unanticipated moments which will provide growth, happiness, and fun. And there will also be the moments that provide scars, bruises and yes even some not so happy times. But that is life right? We have to be willing to move up, down and sideways. Forward and back. Sometimes we have to flex and bend. Other times, we have to tackle whatever comes our way. And even when we are knocked down or pushed back, we need to find the gumption to get back up, dust ourselves off and keep on moving. Even if it means moving in a direction not previously planned on.

This year, I (miraculously) secured a spot on Team Betty. At first, I was shocked and excited that I was selected to be part of the team. Now, I am honored. As I get to know these women better, learn their stories, the ups, the downs, the sideways, I am in awe.

This past week, a few of my Betty Sisters shared some stories of things they were dealing with in their own lives. It was stated by a Betty that not all that glitters is gold, and it is clear that despite how happy and upbeat some people are to the outside world, they can often be fighting bigger battles than ever shown. It has become clear to me that Team Betty is a team of amazing, strong, beautiful, badass women. I feel completely honored to be training and connected to this group. It is definitely a blessing that I did not see coming when I submitted my application last Fall. (Also, the fact that our sponsor list was rolled out the past two weeks was another amazing perk I didn’t fully appreciate when I applied. Seriously, we have some rockstar support from some amazing companies!).

Anyway, getting back on track, I truly believe that some of the most beautiful people have withstood the nastiest storms, stood up just once more than they were knocked down, and somehow did not let their battles harden them to the world. Optimism and kindness people. They matter more than we can appreciate. Optimism and kindness.

Which brings me to my final topic, also being supplemented by another quote from Ms Hannah Brencher:

“If you don’t step out into the life you want, no one else will ever do it for you. If you don’t become the person you’ve always wanted to be, that person will never exist and the world will never know what it missed.”

I am more convinced than ever, that the world is full of amazing and wonderful people. I am also convinced that the world is full of critics. And you have to ignore the haters. Otherwise known as the wisdom of T. Swift: “…players gonna play… haters gonna hate…” and dancers gonna dance! We should all chose to dance. Forget the haters. They’re going to keep hating, and making fun of people, and being miserable. Typically, the haters are those who are unhappy with their own life choices. So dance. Collect the scars. Embrace who you are, chase your dreams, and live the life you were meant to live.

Show the world what you’re made of. Get up when you get knocked down. Each and every time.

Bruises are badass and beautiful.

Here’s to hoping you have a great week with many adventures and a few bruises ahead!

Cheers!

Backup Plans.

Life has been moving at a crazy fast speed for me these past few weeks. I would have thought with an injury that things would slow down…  and they both have and have not. I have less runs to fit in my schedule (no running until at least November for me), but tons of PT and icing sessions have entered my life. Also, I’m finding lots of value in being a triathlete instead of simply a runner since I have two other sports to “fall back” on that don’t have high impact – biking and swimming – and therefore are approved for my continued adventures. When one door closes… you have to find another to open. Having a backup plan (or sport) is always a good idea.

Speaking of continued adventures, the past couple of years I had been toying with the idea of getting a mountain bike to diversify my biking routine. Well, that’s off the table – for now – I’ve discovered Cyclocross! I’m not sure how I’ve managed to miss this amazing sport until now, but I’m so glad that I opened my eyes and realized what amazingness lies within the world of cyclocross. It’s the best of both worlds – speed and a road bike type frame, with dirt and mud and grass and obstacles and so so so much fun! The handling skills and flying dismounts are so fun to practice PLUS there are tons of awesome people in the sport PLUS it’s a great mental break from the IM base maintenance I’ve been trying to keep up and stay motivated with. Last week was my first exposure to actually riding cyclocross, but I was bitten by the bug pretty hard. Happily, I have a friend that is letting me borrow a bike so I can hold off on the purchase of said cyclocross bike and just have fun this fall. (Although my PT told me no obstacles for a couple weeks – my dang calf muscles just can’t handle it… I really screwed myself up this time.)

Other than my newly discovered love for cyclocross, I’ve been biking and swimming to keep up some level of off-season fitness and work has been down right CrAzY. Seriously, my job ramped up the craziness this spring, set in another level of crazy during the summer, and has layered in even more these past 4 weeks. I’m grateful that I’m in the off season for tri because I would not be able to be pulling the hours that I currently am, plus training, plus being a fully functioning and friendly member of society. I know I don’t normally mention work here, but it’s a part of my life and it’s definitely playing a bigger role right now. It’s all about balance. I’m happy to put in the time, but will be happy when this extra work load lightens up again too!

The one thing I am certain of in life is that things always change. People come and go from your life, there are ups and downs, there is times of craziness and times for rest, and the only thing that matters is your ability to adapt to the changes. Things always work out for the best, one way or another. We all certainly get the chance to help direct the changes in our life by the attitude and the mindset that we face them with.

Change is good. It allows us to grow.

First, a few good things (before the pics…)

I read this book on my way back from Reno – it’s not currently available in paperback, but if you can you should download and read it. Very interesting and lots of great perspective on no only athletics, but life in general.

Time is not on my side.

It appears that I’m going to have a lot more time on my hands. (a.k.a. When life doesn’t go as planned… )

Time… is (not) on my side…

In my last post, I was talking about how running is hard – and how I was struggling adding miles to my long runs. I guess this may be a lesson in being careful what you say… Last Wednesday I set out to do a speed workout and as I finished up my warm up, only 1 mile into my run my calf completely seized/locked up. Not wanting to do lasting damage I walked for about 1/2 mile, and arrived at my local track to see if I could finish up my workout on a more forgiving surface. A few hundred feet later it was clear that my workout was over before it really had even started. Whomp whomp…

Thursday I had a power workout on my bike, my calf was feeling a bit better, so I decided to go for it. While not extremely painful, it was not completely pain free either. Due to this, I cut my workout short and ended after an hour. After talking with my coach, we decided it was time for me to see a specialist as I’ve had minor calf issues all season.

Enter the pain chamber.

By Friday afternoon I was in to see the doctor that sponsors our team, and to get some work done. I had the pleasure of experiencing the pain of Graston (scraping) first hand. Holy crap. The short version of the story, no workout on Friday post this session. I managed an easy bike on Saturday, with the hopes of running Sunday. The plan for Sunday was a long run, and I headed to the trails to try and find a softer surface for my aching legs. I walked for my warm-up in hopes I could ease into the long run (planned 18+ miles) and again, half a mile in, it was clear things were not going well. Half a mile later, I realized the run just was not going to happen.

Monday brought session #2 with the doctor and an entire new level of pain that I have never experienced. To provide the full disclosure on this, the session was all of 10-15 minutes, I jumped in the car and immediately realized that I was going to be sick and/or faint. I spent the next 15 minutes pulled off to the side of Brighton Ave (luckily on the nicer part of the street). Fun times living in a city without family around to help bring you to the doctors. Also, fun way to start my day and week…

After this session, which the doctor told me was much more aggressive than normal (because we’re trying to see if I can still race this weekend in Lake George) I was so sore. Thankfully my coworker gave me some pain killers to help me get through the day, since I signed up to volunteer at the State Fair and had to spend most of the day on my feet.

Now, I have another session with the doctor on Tuesday and I am still hoping for a miracle – that all this pain will be worth it and I’ll still be able to race this weekend.

Fingers Crossed. But realistically, I’m highly skeptical that I will be able to. And if I do, it’s probably going to mean no marathon on September 28th… now I’m wishing I had a few more weeks for some R&R so I could still do all these events and not watch my entry fees just go down the drain. Hence, time is not on my side…

Anyhow, time for the weekly wrap up.
