Choices, Chances, Changes.

Choices, Chances, Changes.

We all face them every day. They may not be big choices, grand chances or colossal changes. Yet they occur. All. Day. Long.

Choices

We decide what time to get out of bed.

We decide what to eat.

We decide what to wear.

We decide our activities for the day. Our priorities.

We decide if we go into auto-pilot with our day-to-day, with our weekly routine, with our lives. Or if we decide to take chances…

Chances

We are blessed that we are able to decide when to take chances.

To refuse the mindless routine. To mix it up.

To choose chance.

To actually take the chances that are presented to us.

To jump out into the unknown. To make new friends, to rekindle past relationships, to extend a hand, to assist others, and often, in turn to help ourselves.

We get to take the changes, to embrace change.

Change

Pursue change. Big or small. Try new things.

Try a new flavor of coffee, try a new workout, try a walk down a new path.

Take the chance to adventure up a mountain or across the sea.

To experience all the world has to offer. People, places, things. Embrace them.

To learn. To grow. To evolve. To change.

There are abundant opportunities to dream of, and to embrace change.

Choices, Chances, Change.

We grow through choices, chances and change. Some choices, chances and change are small. Other choices, chances and change will rock your world to its soul. There are positive choices, chances and change. There are the not go great (and yet still oh so valuable) choices, chance and change. They come in all shapes, sizes, and stature. They can have satisfying and exciting outcomes. They can also have depressing and stressful outcomes. Yet I have found, regardless of the outcome achieved, there is always always always something to learn, to experience, and to grow from.

Choices, Chances, Change.

These are the things life is made of.

Five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred minutes

CaptureHow do you measure a year in the life?

In daylights, in sunsets, in midnights, in cups of coffee
In inches, in miles. in laughter, in strife.

In five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred minutes.

Seasons of Love, RENT

Capture

Looking back on the past year, I just cannot believe how much has changed. How much has come and gone from my life. All the new experiences, adventures, people and places.

With Thanksgiving being last week, I was very busy working on prepping my house that I’ve owned for all of 3 whole weeks, buying food, and figuring out how to cook a full Thanksgiving meal for my family in between traveling to Syracuse for work, finalizing my prior house for sale, hanging out with friends and sneaking a few workouts in.

To say the very least, the past two weeks were quite the whirlwind of events (per usual, welcome to my world). However, despite the fact I was super busy, I also felt very relaxed, happy and definitely extremely blessed.

I know that most people typically wait until the New Year to review the prior year and look forward to the next, but Thanksgiving just seems like the appropriate time for me to take a step back and really look at everything. I cannot believe what a difference a year can make. There have been so many changes in my life. Last year I was struggling with a relationship that ended, I was struggling with whether or not I would race a second 70.3, and was questioning a lot of things in my life. This year I have moved to a new city, a new home, I have completed my second 70.3 and signed up for my third AND for my first full 140.6 Ironman event. I have made new friends, joined a new triathlon team with T2 Multisport, experienced new things (hello CX!), somehow secured a spot on Team Betty 2015 (still so pumped!) and worked to embrace life to its fullest taking the bad along with the good.

Despite feeling a bit lost this time last year, I did know and hold on to one fact – I had an amazing childhood and an amazing family that continues to love and support me. They have proven that they will support me even when I do crazy things – you know, like sign up for an Ironman event, or make the decision to move to be closer to home despite holding a job in a city 2.5 hours away – I know that I am truly blessed to have this support.

And I also found that I had a few truly amazing and steadfast friends that helped me immensely this past year – through cups of coffee (or pints of beer), workouts, conversations, and even a little assistance packing up a moving truck – you guys have been amazing and I can’t thank you enough.

I don’t know what this next year will bring, but I do know that I am excited for every experience – both good and bad – that will come with the next five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred minutes.

Irongirl to Ironman… Volunteering & Cheering!

Due to lack of internet connection in our house in Lake Placid, and the fact that I spent most of my time swimming, biking, running and cheering – I opted out of last Monday’s post. So THIS week, I’m posting double the fun!!

Yes, last week I finally went to go watch (and volunteer at) my first ever full Ironman event. As promised, just being around the event was so inspiring and moving – and even more so due to the crazy weather that hit Lake Placid on Sunday morning! Lake Placid Ironman has been running for 16 consecutive years, and this was the first year that lightning interfered with the race!

The day started out well enough, there was a beautiful sunrise over Mirror Lake, and the athletes were assembling on the beach – it was so great to hang at the T2 team tent for a bit and wish everyone good luck, emotions were running high! The race started with the pro men, pro female and then the rolling start for the age groupers! After watching all the athletes get in the water and the pros start their second loop of the course, we moved down to watch the athletes run to T1. That’s about when all the fun started. We heard the thunder rolling in and shortly after, there was some serious lightning! Being away from the beach, we couldn’t see what was happening but figured there must be a halt to the swim based on the order the athletes were running through. As the storm kept growing in strength and the lightning became more severe, my friends and I went for a bit of cover. There was rumor the race was being stopped, we were soaked, and since the storm didn’t seem to be letting up we headed toward our house.

The house we rented was located 2 blocks off from where the bike course leaves the oval circle and heads down hill to exit Lake Placid and head to Keene. At this point, we realized the race was still going as bikes were heading out midst all the thunder, lightning and POURING rain – however since their was so much chaos and the athletes had a few hours until they would be back we decided to go grab breakfast and dry clothes.

Fast forward to about 10:30 am – I was back out on the course with my T2 group just in time to cheer on my teammates as they finished loop 1 of the bike! Luckily the rain had passed through and the sun was back out. Athletes were smiling and excited to have Loop #1 behind them. After cheering for a while, it was time to head to transition to volunteer! I was in the gear bag area where athletes grab their gear for running, head to the changing tent, and then we rehang their bags with the bike gear while the athletes start their run. This ended up being a great volunteer spot as I was able to see, cheer and encourage all the various Syracuse athletes that I knew before they headed out for their marathon!

My shift ended around 4 – it was back to the house to change to dry clothes again (it rained on and off during the early afternoon) and grab a little dinner – then my friend and I headed back out to cheer for everyone as they finished the marathon. Luckily I got back to the course just in time to see the T2 crew each rock their finishes! After watching everyone finish, my friend C and I decided to head out to the pub to watch and cheer the athletes that were still working on their run segments (and grab a quick drink in the process!). To me, these people that are out there, trying to beat the midnight deadline are the most inspiring – as the last hour approached, we headed back to the finish line for the party as all the spectators cheer in the final athletes. I swear, as an athlete, it would almost be more fun to be one of the final finishers as SO MANY people are cheering them on (although, running out on the course in the dark with limited lighting would not be so fun… I can’t imagine the mind games you must have to play as the sun sets and you know it’s time to just keep pushing to finish!)!

All in all, it was completely inspiring to be at the event (as expected), and I completed my mission for the weekend. I went, I trained, I cheered, I volunteered, and yes… I signed up for next year! I am pumped even though I know this is crazy to give up my next year to prepare for this. Luckily the true training won’t start until January, but I know I just signed up for a huge challenge that will be SO rewarding to finish and yet SO overwhelming to tackle. Luckily, I have built a great support network over the course of these last 6-8 months in Syracuse. Having a coach that I work well with, a team to train with, and other friends and family behind me, rooting me on, means the world! I finally have my bike set, a gym and a schedule I am used to, and I’m ready to go to work!

~~~~
Ok, now fast forward through the week, I returned to Syracuse and worked to continue with the training (despite having a bit of a workout hang-over from Lake Placid) and worked to settle back into reality of going to work every day (as compared to my life of just working out and doing whatever I wanted for the past week… I wish life could be like this all the time!!).
Saturday I had a brick on the Caz Tri course – I signed up for the Olympic Triathlon next weekend through the urging of some of my T2 teammates. Saturday was my first time on the Caz course, and this course is hilly! Chard Rd and a few of the other hills really are challenging on the course. Sunday should be interesting to say the least. I’m not really sure how I am going to do since I’m definitely feeling a little burned out, but hopefully I can recover a bit with my mini taper this week!
Finally, on Sunday, the Irongirl event ran in Syracuse for the 6th year straight. This was the event that brought me into the world of triathlon in 2009. So while I have never returned to the IG course to compete, it holds a special place in my heart. I love the fact that the venue gives women a chance to  tackle something that most didn’t know they were capable of! Every year I have had the chance to go back and watch friends take on, and complete their first ever triathlon. It’s amazing to watch the pure joy, cheer, and smiles on everyone’s faces throughout the day.
Volunteering this year as kayak support was especially fun as the swim is the part of triathlon that tends to scare people away from the sport. It was just amazing to see so many women overcoming the fear that they couldn’t complete the swim and making their way to the bike and run! I think that everyone managed to complete the swim, despite a few people being seriously scared and panicked during it! I am just so proud of each and every person that takes on the challenge, overcomes their fears, and accomplishes more than they thought possible!
~~~

It was a great couple of weeks – I’ve really been living triathlon every day – and I feel like my post above barely scratches the surface of everything that happened! I didn’t even get a chance to talk about paddle boarding, blueberry picking, and a whole host of other random happenings – but I guess I’ll have to let the photos below try to fill in some of the things I didn’t talk about above!

Sprinting! Goals Attained, & a solid PR!

Ahh where to start?

I don’t know.

All I know is that somehow, from what feels like out of the blue, I accomplished a silent goal that I secretly hoped for five years ago. A goal that was seeded inside me after my first triathlon in 2009. Upon completion of Syracuse Irongirl, my first encounter with triathlon, I was so happy and excited about how the race had gone. I couldn’t believe that I had accomplished the goal of swimming, biking and running that race. I couldn’t believe that I had somehow completed the entire thing without resting once!

When I ran the Irongirl, I had never before officially run a 5K without taking a break. I was not really a swimmer, a biker or a runner, but that summer I somehow transformed myself from a person that walked often and ran occasionally (but not very far or very fast), into a triathlete. If you look back into the depths of the archives of this blog, you can read my very early beginnings of a triathlete (and blogger). You can also clearly see that I was immediately bitten by the “tribug” wondering how much better I could do this triathlon thing in the future.

I clearly remember 1) being so excited about how that day had gone and 2) looking at the times posted by the top finishers and secretly setting a goal where I would try to swim, bike and run as fast as they could.

Well, I can hardly believe it. But that day came. It came quietly. It was not surrounded with any big hurrah, and in truth, the milestone that I reached yesterday went slipped by me until I really sat down today to think about it. Yesterday, I raced in the Gillie Girl Sprint Triathlon. I was provided a corporate sponsored entry to the event due from a friend and was simply at the race to have a fun day with some friends that were also racing in the female only triathlon.

I knew going into the race that I was well prepared to cover the distance (seeing that I raced the 70.3 only a few weeks ago). My biggest concern was trying to get some speed out of my swim, bike and run since I have truly been focusing on endurance and distance to so long. If you have been reading, you would know I’ve had a few speed workouts during the past few weeks to try and get me ready to go, but I was still questioning what type of speed I would achieve.

Discussions with the coach circled around the fact that “it’s a sprint and it should hurt” and I was just concerned that I might lay it all out too soon and burn out before the finish. Due to a malfunction of my HR monitor (it now appears to be dead beyond repair) I raced blind – without data – yesterday. Truth be told, this caused me to hold back ever so slightly during the bike, but I really can’t complain since I had a good race overall.

At the start of our swim, we were told that the reigning champ of the race was in our swim wave (ages 25-34) and that we all should be gunning for her. (No pressure – ha.) During the swim, I could tell that I was second in my wave. This was a weird sensation as I have never been in a race and known so solidly where I stood as far as placing. I could see this girl just ahead of me as we dodged around the slower swimmers from the prior two waves. Upon the second loop of the swim course (Gille lake is really more of a pond…) I could tell that this other blue cap athlete 31 years old (my age group) and that she was just ahead of me but I was not going to catch her.

On the bike course, it was 10 minutes of trying to settle in and relax my heart rate before starting to push it again. At this point, the prior year race winner went whizzing by me – I knew then I would not be catching her on the bike… (or as it turns out, the run… she won again this year). At the turn for the bike, I saw the lead girl from my swim wave and knew I was a minute or two behind her, so she was gaining distance on me as well. So, I turned my focus to maintaining my place in the AG and pushing as hard as I could, while continuing to cheer for and encourage the athletes that I passed on the course. I just love events like this, with so many people giving triathlon a first try (tri?) and really proving to themselves that they can accomplish a goal that they set out to tackle!

For the run, I was really missing having my HR data to go by, however, I knew my HR was high. I focused on trying to settle myself into a high yet sustainable pace for the run. Admittedly what I am going to type here, is not going to match with the race results because the course was shy of 3.1 miles. However, my first mile I put down an 8 minute pace. Perfect! My second mile, I had leveled out my HR and was feeling good yet a little fatigued. I hit a 7:50 mile. The third mile was time to lay everything I had left down on the course. Once I reentered the park, it was mostly down hill to flat. I hit a average 7:30 pace for the last segment. Not my fastest 5K, but respectable considering I swam and biked first!

Overall, I finished the race in 1 Hour 20 minutes! I was pumped on this time, despite never catching the first girl in my AG. I knew I had a solid second place in my AG secured. I grabbed the medal, grabbed some water and chocolate milk and headed back out to watch my friends Erin, Meghan and Tristan finish the race. I knew Erin wasn’t too far behind me and that Meghan was about a mile and a half back. I was unsure of where Tristan was since I had missed seeing her out on the course… Erin finished in 1:27, Tristan at 1:44 and Meghan at 1:46!!

Amazing times for all and everyone met personal goals on the day!

It was not until Erin and I went to go check the race results that I found out that I came in 4th overall. Yes, 4th!!! I was stunned. I had no idea, I mean I knew I was early in on the finishers (especially since nobody was announcing finishers and the finish line did not have a lot of spectators yet…) but holy wow!! And Erin and I quickly realized we both had placed for our AG’s! Exciting Day!!

Swim: 11:56 (1:22/100yd)

T1: 01:03

Bike: 43:35 (19.7 mph)

T2: 01:18

Run: 22:50 (7:22/mi for 5K… actual course was 2.9 miles)

Total Time: 1 Hour, 20 Minutes, 44 Seconds. Resulting in a 1st place AG award (the top 3 winners are removed from the AG awards), and 4th overall finisher for the day.

It was upon review of these stats today, that I realized I had met my goal. I swam a solid swim split, I just about hit my silent goal of 20 mph on the bike, and I ran a solid run. I became one of those names at the top of the results page.  A silent goal that I had silently thought “it would be amazing, if someday…” but not one that I ever dared to utter out loud. Not until I accomplished it.

Now, in all fairness, I have gone through the self-doubt talk that can surround this, and that others might say. That it was not a super competitive triathlon, that finishing in the top doesn’t count because of X, Y, or Z. But really, at the end of the day, my numbers are my numbers. I met goals that I didn’t think were truly possible or attainable even 2 years ago – regardless of my overall ranking. Goals that I never dreamed would come to be. If I had told that girl writing this blog 5 years ago, that girl who had just finished her first triathlon, that in 5 years that same girl (or a more fit, and seasoned version of that girl) would be contending with some of the faster triathletes, that this girl would have completed two 70.3 triathlons and be on the verge of signing up for her first Ironman – I would have laughed right in my own face.

Today it hit me. I truly have accomplished a goal I secretly set out to accomplish five years ago. A goal I didn’t believe was truly attainable until it snuck up on me, and I realized the day had come and gone.

Today was for silent celebration of that goal (well, almost silent, since I am now broadcasting it to the world… but if you’re reading this blog, this is where I get to brag since it really serves as my review of my athletic journey, both past and present.)

Today was for recognition of how many things I have accomplished in the past five years. In not only my athletic endeavors, but my professional endeavors and my personal life. Not everything has been, or is, perfect. Perfection will never truly be achieved, but life is better that way.

Not everything has been easy (remember when I was calling “Uncle” earlier this year?), some things have taken more work and dedication, some heartache, and some tough days and times to achieve. And I know that moving forward, as I tackle new goals and encounter new opportunities and challenges in life that there will be ups and downs, but in the end, it will all be worth it.

Ahhh, race advice from my coach. This scared and excited me for the race all at once!

Admittedly, still a newbie at canning, so I’m pretty sure there is a lot of room for improvement on these babies, but they’re successfully sealed!

So last week I alluded to project #2 but did not show anything for it… here it is! I found an old rusty lantern, and refinished it! While some may say it was worth more before I repainted it, I have to say I just love how it came out (and I don’t have to worry about the rust or lead paint anymore…)

Unsure why, but I’m loving banana flavored things lately. Which is weird because I’m not a HUGE banana fan to start with, but… I’m rolling with it!

Finally, this is my alarm for tomorrow. Since I missed my long run yesterday for the race, it’s now on the schedule for tomorrow. Why I thought marathon training was going to be a good idea, I do not know. I am just happy that the 4:15 alarm is at least still in the off position.

Lake Placid, a PR & Dirty 30.

I don’t know about you, but it felt like last week just flew by!! And, it definitely didn’t hurt that I took off Thursday and Friday so that I could head up to Lake Placid for a weekend of training with the T2 Team!

My workouts Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday all went really well, with my run on Wednesday finally being semi-enjoyable. I’m not sure why, but for the past 3 weeks, running has felt like a complete chore. Biking has been fun due to my new ride and new milestones reached, and my swim workouts during this round of training has been an absolute blast! Essentially, my attitude toward each individual of the three sports has reversed from last year’s experience – it’s interesting to think how things can change, shift, and evolve through each experience with the individual sports!

It has been truly frustrating that running, which has brought me so much joy over the past 5 years, suddenly has felt so awful for the past month. Having a decent run last week felt especially good!

Thursday was a day of travel, running a few last minute errands to prep for Placid, and cooking more recipes from my new cookbook for the weekend! I made rice cakes, oatmeal wraps and peanut butter protein balls. I swear, having real food to grab for snacks and food on the bike helps SO much – to avoid the gut rot that can come with eating gels, chews, and other “food” for hours on end during training and endurance events. Needless to say, a few of my teammates ended up being pretty jealous of my food about half way through our long training day on Saturday!

On Friday, I was up bright and early to make the trek from Saratoga  to Lake Placid. We were all meeting up at Mirror Lake for a swim at 9:30. On the drive up to LP, there were blue skies and sun – about 10 miles out, the cloud cover rolled over and it started to rain. You’ve just got to love the high peaks region – the weather can change in an instant! The overcast skies made it all the worse to get in the water, after putting on our wetsuits, we had to jump in and I swear the temperature stole your breath for a few seconds – which was not a welcome experience for me since I was already nervous about my first open water swim of the season.

I had never had any major issues with open water swims until last year, then suddenly during the Oswego Triathlon (a week before the Syracuse 70.3) I experienced my first panic attack in the water.  It was a mixture of swimming with the masses, dealing with sizable waves, and feeling like the neck of my wetsuit was choking me. I spent the entire following week trying to tell myself the swim the following weekend at 70.3 would be fine, and even went for 3 open water swims to try and settle myself down, but again had panic attacks during the race. Needless to say, after the 70.3, I was ready for a break from triathlon and swimming and didn’t go near the water again last year.  Fast forward to this year, and I’ve really enjoyed the pool swimming but have been dreading gearing up to go back into open water swimming and the washing machine of race day swims.

Friday’s swim in mirror lake with a group of about 15 athletes was a good first experience for open water. I did experience my panic attacks again, but was able to get through the swim. It also didn’t hurt that the buoys/course markers in Mirror Lake are all laid out with a yellow rope under the water which makes staying on course pretty easy! I just had to deal with swimming in a group. I stayed near the back, but that backfired on me since I kept catching up to the group, despite feeling like my wetsuit was choking me and I couldn’t really breathe like I was used to. So on the turn, I went toward the front of the group, but then kept having the same issue with my wetsuit. My takeaway, I need to find a wetsuit with a lower neckline. I’m not letting this thing hold me back for race day.

After the swim, we headed to the coaches house to grab a quick bite to eat and get ready to head out for a shorter ride. We all headed out to bike the back portion of the LP IM bike course which climbs from Wilmington back into LP. It was a lot of fun heading out there since the road was all down hill (despite the fact that the black flies felt like rain hitting your face…), the less fun part was turning around and heading back into Placid (where we then had to be careful not to have your mouth open for fear of unintentionally eating aforementioned black flies). The road along the cascades is beautiful, and almost distracts you from the fact that you are climbing about 800 feet in elevation over 10 miles. However, all in all, I was surprised that the climb really didn’t seem that bad. Some of the climbs in the Syracuse 70.3 course are definitely more intense!

The rest of Friday was fairly uneventful/low-key, checked into the hotel, cleaned up, went to dinner at the coaches house where they surprised myself and M with a birthday cake! (Her birthday was on Thursday, mine on Sunday – yes, I appropriately rang in the next decade of my life swimming, biking and running my heart out this weekend). We then had some race-day strategy sessions and a few of us caught a beverage at the LP Pub and Brewery before crashing for the evening. We had to rest up for Saturday – it was the major training day of the weekend!

Saturday brought about a 7 am departure on the bike course. Those of us doing the Syracuse 70.3 were set to complete 1 loop of the course, and those training for a full Ironman were headed out for 2 loops. We were all warned multiple times to take the first part of the course VERY easy since we would be heading out from LP to Keene which involves following Route 73 where you drop over 1200 feet in about 7 miles, oh and the road is in desperate need of repaving/repair. Seriously, your entire bike wheel could fit in some of the potholes, there is little to no shoulder and going over your handlebars would not be out of the question. Several people in our group lost water bottles as they rattled out of their holders, and a number of people said their hands hurt from gripping the handlebars so tight as we decended. It really is time for a little road repair, I had been warned several times prior to my LP trip that the roads were bad up there – and people were not kidding!! In fact, the warnings were almost understated!

After the trip to Keene, we headed up to Jay. Through some rolling hills, the roads improved, and then we followed the road along Ausable River which was gorgeous! We hit the turn around in Ausable Forks, headed back toward Upper Jay, climbed to Wilmington and then headed up the climbs to bring us back to LP. I will admit, the climbs from Wilmington to LP felt much more intense after biking the course than they did the day before! By the time I reached LP, I was definitely happy that I did not have to head out for a second loop! Especially since the sun was shining down, the temps were in the 80s, and the crew that had to continue on would definitely be baking in the afternoon heat! (However, I also realized that next year, there is a 95% likelihood that I will in fact be in the group heading out for loop #2…).

After we finished up the bike, one of my teammates, K and I headed out for a 6 mile run to complete our Brick workout. Originally I was going to hit up the Northwoods Loop, but not knowing the hill profile, and felling a bit tired due to messing up my nutrition on the bike, I stuck with Kristin and opted for 2 loops around Mirror Lake. Loop 1 went fairly well, but loop 2 was more of a just-survive-this-loop-and-you’ll-be-done-with-this-workout type of run. By the start of loop 2, all I could talk and think about was jumping in the lake upon finish of the run. I just wanted to go stand in the cold weather and cool off!!! So we muscled through and did just that! I swear, there is nothing better than wading in cold water after a hot run!! (Makes me wish I lived on a lake!)

After cooling off, it was back to the hotel to shower, and we headed to grab sandwiches in town. There is an amazing sandwich shop that serves 46 different sandwiches – one named after each of the 46 high peaks (plus crepes, breakfast sandwiches, salads, etc.). The sandwiches are AMAZING. If you’re ever in LP, you have to head to Main Street and go to Big Mountain Deli.

Post lunch, it was food coma time – I’m pretty sure we all crashed. Around 4 pm, it was back to the lake for another open water swim. One of the coaches gave me some more mental tips to help me through the swim and I had a much stronger swim (although only a few of us were out there, so no crowds to deal with on this one…). I finished the 1.2 mile swim in 32 minutes despite a few leg cramps. 32 minutes! (Last year it took me 42-45 minutes to cover 1.2 miles, 10 minutes off your time is HUGE for triathlon.) After swimming, we cleaned up again, hit up happy hour at the hotel and I was able to meet up with my friends R and P for a birthday beverage. Then it was off to the coaches house to grab our race packets for the LP Half Marathon the following day!

After grabbing our T2 Shirts and Race Packets, we headed back to the pub for dinner and more beverages. Beer = carb-loading right?! (Unfortunately, due to my poor hydration/nutrition it also led to my own paranoia all night about trying to catch up on electrolytes, and my failure to actually get things corrected… but live and learn…?). After a great dinner with about 10 of the group of T2-ers we all headed back to crash for the race the next day. Errr. I mean “catered long run” as the coaches were telling us to think of it.

The next morning, we were told to meet up around 7:15 at the olympic oval. We all stood around and chatted, made a few trips back and forth for last minute items – which in my case included a run to my car 10 minutes before the start to change sneakers since my shoelace conveniently decided to break right before the start… and we were off at 8am! K and I ended up falling in line with each other after the run up the hill on main street, and paced each other for the entire race. Our first three (flat) miles were at 8:15 (too fast considering we were running 13 miles, and had trained so hard the prior day), after this point, K and I finally were able to slow down and settle into a more reasonable pace of 8:45 for the next six miles. At mile eight, K knew she was closing in on a serious PR – not having run 13 miles sun-two hours before. At mile nine, I started to run into trouble – feeling light headed and all that fun stuff. We slowed back to a 9 minute pace, grabbed some food and then prepped for the hills back into LP and the finish line. Three miles and 300 feet of hills later, K and I were entering the olympic speed skating oval to finish the race! We crossed the line in 1 hour 54 minutes for an 8:42 pace, running the entire course together – it’s awesome when you find a training buddy that you can perfectly match pace with! …especially when they help keep you going for the final few miles when you’re feeling pretty tired – thanks K!!!!! I definitely owe you!

It’s going to be fun to see how we line up at the 70.3 – K will enter the water 5 minutes before me on race day, but we bike and run approximately the same pace. If all goes well with my swim, there is a decent chance we may exit the water around the same time and eventually fall in with each other for the remainder of the race!

After crossing the finish line, I saw R and P for a few minutes (they left quickly due to black flies), then headed to meet up with the T2 crew, cheer on our remaining teammates and finish out the weekend. After our goodbyes and good wishes for the next two weeks of training, I was packing up, cleaning up, and heading out of town. It wasn’t until I got back to Saratoga and researching my prior 13.1 time that I realized that I actually PR’ed the race too! ….yes, I am now one of those people who does something crazy like not taper for a race, have an intense training day, not eat or hydrate properly, and yet still PR a race. – Makes me want to actually taper, rest, eat and hydrate properly then run a half marathon to truly find out what my PR pace would be!

All in all, it was a great weekend in LP! I met a ton of great people, swam, biked, and ran my heart out, enjoyed some delicious food, and all-in-all had an awesome time. I decided that even if I wasn’t training for a specific event, I would love to head up to LP with T2 just to enjoy the weekend in the ADK!

Now, I have two weeks to fix the few issues that I did find over the weekend – (1) my wetsuit, (2) my bike seat – swapping back out to my road bike seat, I just won’t have the new seat broken in before the race!, (3) staying on top of electrolytes/food intake during the race.

By adjusting these few things, staying on-top of the food/hydration/electrolytes, and with cooperation of the weather on race day, the Syracuse 70.3 could be an amazing race for me. I feel like all the pieces are falling into place just in time for June 22nd!

Sunday  we ran the Lake Placid Half Marathon – per the coaches “this is a catered run, not a race” – due to the fact we were all running on tired legs… they gave us our packets the night before and told us to take it easy.

A shot from the LP Half – generally, I’m not a fan of race photos, but knowing what was going on in this one, I love it!

Post race catered run, it was discovered that our group had 4 people PR the race… (including me!)
